Who am I? Blog 1

Introduction: The Power of Starting Before You’re Ready

Through the years and the tears, I’ve learned that perfectionism is just fear wearing a tidy disguise. It tells you that you’re “not quite ready yet,” when in truth, the only way to get ready is to begin.

That’s exactly how the podcast The Anxious Tradeswoman (now building confidence) was born. I’d planned it, re-planned it, doubted it, and then one day I decided: it’s time to throw perfectionism in the bin and just talk into the microphone. Because sometimes courage isn’t loud; it’s quiet and shaky, but it still shows up.

So here we are. Episode 1 in writing. Let’s start with “who am I” and why this podcast and blog exist.

From School Halls to Workshops

I was 15 when I began my apprenticeship as a heavy-vehicle and plant mechanic at Cummins in Wetherill Park, Sydney. School and I never really got along; I knew early on that I wanted to do something with my hands, something real.

At an apprenticeship expo, three conversations changed everything.

  • One told me I shouldn’t do this job.
  • Another told me I couldn’t.
  • And the last, thanks to Sarah, another tradeswoman showed me that I can.

That one moment of encouragement opened a door that shaped my entire life.

Finding My Place in a Male-Dominated Trade

Walking into TAFE for the first time, I felt every stare, every doubt. I was the only girl in the room, a teenager trying to find her footing in a world that wasn’t built with her in mind.

I worked hard, sometimes too hard, to prove I belonged. When I started winning awards, instead of celebrating, I questioned whether I’d earned them or if they were just for show. That self-doubt crept in deep.

For years, I carried the heavy weight of trying to be “good enough.” I didn’t want to be seen as the female mechanic; I just wanted to be seen as a good mechanic.

When Working Hard Turns into Working Too Hard

I pushed myself until I couldn’t anymore. Between competing in WorldSkills (the Olympics of trades), training, speaking, mentoring, and working full-time, I ran straight into burnout.

It felt like I was moving through water, slow, heavy, exhausted. My body was there, but my joy wasn’t.

So, I stopped. I took four months off, re-evaluated everything, and found a new path: teaching. Helping the next generation of apprentices felt like lighting a spark I’d nearly lost. But soon I realized something deeper: supporting tradeswomen wasn’t just something I could do; it was something I had to do.

Turning Pain into Purpose

In 2021, I stepped out on my own and started Louise Azzopardi Training and Development Solutions, a business dedicated to supporting tradeswomen and tradies. Because the truth is, it’s not just about fixing engines; it’s about fixing systems, mindsets, and cultures that make people feel small.

Today, I speak, coach, and run workshops to help tradies build resilience, confidence, and healthy workplaces. And now, through this podcast and blog, I want to bring those lessons straight to you.

Why This Podcast and Blog Exists

I’ve cried more tears in my car after work than I can count. Tears of frustration, exhaustion, and sometimes, pride. Those moments taught me that growth doesn’t happen in silence it happens when we share the hard stuff and learn from it together.

The Anxious Tradeswoman Podcast (now building confidence) is my way of saying: you’re not alone in feeling anxious, uncertain, or overwhelmed. I’ll be sharing the tools, insights, and stories that helped me find balance, so you can too without having to cry through the same lessons.

Reflection Prompt

Before you go, I want to leave you with this question:

Where in your life are you waiting for “perfect” before you begin?

Because maybe today, you don’t need perfect; you just need to start.

Final Thoughts

Thank you for being here for Episode 1. It feels surreal to finally speak these words aloud, after years of thinking about them. But if there’s one thing I’ve learned, it’s this: bravery isn’t about never feeling anxious; it’s about acting anyway.

So, here’s to beginning, imperfectly but wholeheartedly.
And remember, you don’t have to do it all without fear. You just must do it with heart.
