We’re good at moving the goalpost.
You hit a milestone… and almost immediately, your mind goes to:
“Okay, what’s next?”
“What could I have done better?”
“What do I need to fix next year?”
And just like that the moment passes.
No pause.
No acknowledgment.
No celebration.
What if you stopped for a second?
Before you jump into what needs to change…
what if you looked at what you’ve already done?
Not just the big things.
Everything.
Because celebrating yourself isn’t about ego.
It’s about maintenance.
The preventative maintenance for self-doubt
Imposter syndrome thrives when you forget your wins.
When everything you’ve achieved gets brushed off as:
“Just luck.”
“Not a big deal.”
“Anyone could’ve done that.”
But when you sit down and list out what you’ve done…
It tells a different story.
A real one.
One that shows effort, resilience, growth even if it didn’t look perfect along the way.
Your wins don’t have to be impressive to anyone else
Some wins are obvious.
Finishing an apprenticeship.
Getting a promotion.
Starting something new.
Hitting a goal you’ve been working towards.
But some wins?
They’re quieter.
Getting out of bed on a hard day.
Not quitting when you wanted to.
Holding a boundary.
Walking away from something that wasn’t right for you.
Asking for help.
Making it through a tough season.
These count.
All of them.
Not every year looks how you planned
Sometimes you don’t hit the goals you set.
Sometimes life throws things at you that you didn’t plan for.
Loss.
Stress.
Health challenges.
Unexpected changes.
And suddenly, the version of “success” you had at the start of the year doesn’t apply anymore.
But that doesn’t mean you didn’t achieve anything.
It means you adapted.
And that’s worth recognising.
You made it through
If you’re here, reading this…
You made it through the year.
Through the good days.
Through the hard ones.
Through the moments you didn’t think you could handle.
That alone is something to acknowledge.
Make it real
Don’t just think about your wins write them down.
Go back through photos.
Messages.
Moments you forgot about.
List everything.
Big.
Small.
In-between.
Because when you see it all in front of you, it’s harder to dismiss.
Let yourself feel it
This part matters.
Not just listing your wins but feeling them.
The pride.
The relief.
The “I did that.”
Sit with it for a moment.
Let it land.
Because if you don’t let yourself, feel your wins…
they don’t stay with you.
Celebrate in your own way
Celebration doesn’t have to be big or loud.
It just must mean something to you.
A day to rest.
Time with people you love.
Doing something that makes you feel good.
Buying yourself something you’ve been wanting.
It can be simple.
But it should be intentional.
Before you plan what’s next…
We spend so much time thinking about what we want to change.
What we didn’t like.
What didn’t go to plan.
What needs to be “better” next year.
And yes growth matters.
But so does acknowledgment.
Because if you only ever focus on what’s missing…
you’ll never feel like you’ve done enough.
The shift
Celebrating yourself isn’t extra.
It’s necessary.
It builds confidence.
It grounds you in reality.
It reminds you of what you’re capable of.
Final thought
Before you move into the next goal, the next plan, the next version of yourself…
Pause.
Look back.
And give yourself credit for everything you’ve done
especially the things no one else saw.
Because those?
They’re the ones that built you.
And they deserve to be celebrated.
